Choosing to Apply

In a nutshell

Our graduate roles are now open, and we want to help you decide if consulting at Newton is the right place to start your career. It can be difficult to know what your next steps should be after graduation. To help with this decision, we’ve been speaking to some of our recent grads about their journeys to Newton.

First up, we spoke to Ethan, an Operations Consultant and Engineering Graduate from the University of Birmingham. Here’s what he had to say about choosing to apply:

Where did you first hear about Newton?

I first heard about Newton through word of mouth at uni. I then noticed they advertised a lot on my social media, so I think the combination of those two things caught my attention.

After hearing about us, what did you do next and what made you want to apply?

Having seen Newton’s ads, I then looked them up online. I think the website does a really good job of honestly explaining the variety of the role and how it requires a broad range of skills. This obviously attracts people who aren’t sure about what they want to do. At Newton, you’re exposed to a lot of new skills and ways of working which is great for someone who wants to keep their options open.

I’d say everything I’ve experienced in the job so far was advertised on the website and that the grad pages are good at setting the correct expectations for the role.

I also think consulting as a profession is innately vague, but Newton caught my eye because it seemed more exciting compared to other sites and acknowledged that the vagueness of consulting is actually a benefit because it leads to variety.

Were you always interested in consulting or were you considering a different career path?

By the time I was looking at Newton, I wanted to do something in the professional services. As an Engineer, I knew I didn’t want to spend my life in a lab, and instead hoped for a “real-world” job that dealt with people.

I think that’s where consultancy came in because it meant not being pigeon-holed into something specific and I knew there were many opportunities available across various sectors. At Newton in particular, I could see that you worked with people all the time and that the work was dynamic and challenging. All of these factors influenced my decision to apply.

What would your advice be to people who are deciding if they want to apply to Newton?

I would say give it a go, and the application process will give you a good indication of if the role and company is right for you. As you get further into the process, you meet more people from Newton and they’re really honest and open. Make sure to ask them questions and they’ll give you clear insights into what you can expect from the role.

Just from my personal experience since starting, I’d say there are two other things to consider. The first is the colleagues you will meet. Genuinely people at Newton are some of my closest friends and I think that’s a pretty unique thing to be able to say about the people you work with. My second piece of advice is to think about your longer-term career trajectory. The skills you develop early on as a consultant can set you up, not just for an amazing consulting career, but also as a future leader, a business owner and much more. There’s a really strong progression plan for consultants here but no matter how long you stay at Newton, the skills you develop in your first few years can set you up for a very strong career.
